The Gates LL-2GT EPDM 10 mm belt is an open-ended timing belt with a 2 mm pitch, sold by the metre for 3D-printer linear drives and other motion systems. It combines the 2GT tooth profile with an EPDM rubber body, longitudinal glass-fibre reinforcement and a protective fabric tooth facing.

Its main appeal is the material and tooth engagement: it can renew a correctly matched 2GT drive without changing the pitch, and is particularly useful when selecting a belt for a more demanding thermal environment. This is not a 1.5GT belt or a fixed-length endless belt.

EPDM for demanding thermal environments

EPDM is ethylene propylene diene rubber. Gates Unitta highlights ozone resistance in its EPDM belt family, a useful property against environmental ageing of the elastomer. This version is advertised for a temperature range of −45 to +135 °C.

This range describes the belt, not the permissible operating temperature of the whole machine. Motors, bearings, lubricants, printed parts, electronics and tensioners have their own limits. A heated chamber requires the entire system to be designed for its service conditions; the upper limit is not a recommendation for continuous operation at 135 °C.

Reinforcement and tooth facing

The glass-fibre tensile cord provides longitudinal tensile strength, while the rubber body allows the belt to flex around the pulleys. Reinforcement helps keep the drive stable; it does not mean the belt should be tensioned as tightly as possible.

The fabric tooth facing protects contact with the pulley. Mellow describes this version as having a treatment intended to reduce surface wear and particle shedding during engagement. Correct alignment helps make use of this construction, but the material alone does not eliminate vibration, noise or printing artefacts.

Practical results also depend on pulley concentricity, tension, machine stiffness and motion tuning. EPDM identifies the body material; it should not be confused with RF, a designation associated with a specific tooth-facing treatment.

Compatibility: profile, width and installation

Use with toothed pulleys and belt clamps matching the 2GT, 2 mm pitch profile, with adequate working width for a 10 mm belt. One component to consider is our Mellow GT2 20-tooth drive pulley for 10 mm belts and a 5 mm shaft; shaft fit and mounting position must also be checked.

Suitable for machines and conversions designed around 10 mm 2GT belts. It is not a direct substitute for a 6 or 9 mm belt: additional width requires checking flanges, idlers, spacers, clamps and printed parts. In particular, compatibility with the 9 mm Z belts of a standard Voron 2.4 must not be assumed without checking and adapting the assembly.

A 1.5GT pulley has a different tooth profile and cannot be used with this belt. A nominal 2 mm pitch alone is also insufficient if another belt uses a different tooth profile. An open belt requires end clamps; do not improvise a splice to replace an endless belt.

If your design requires a different width, our Gates LL-2GT EPDM 6 mm belt is also available. Choose the width specified for the drive; changing it may require adapting pulleys and clamps.

Installation, tension and firmware

  • Measure the complete route and allow enough length for clamping and adjustment before cutting.
  • Avoid sharp folds, twisting and edge damage. Store the belt loosely coiled.
  • Align pulleys and idlers so the belt does not continuously rub on flanges or machine parts.
  • Follow the machine design’s tensioning instructions without overloading shafts and bearings. There is no universal tensioning frequency for every belt width and span.
  • On CoreXY systems, check balanced tension between both belt routes and test the complete travel.

Changing only the belt material, while retaining the 2 mm pitch, drive pulley, microstepping and mechanical ratios, does not require changing the motion scale. Keep steps/mm in Marlin, rotation_distance in Klipper, and the steps/mm configured with M92 in RepRapFirmware. After replacement, check travel, tension and resonances. Changing tooth count, pitch or gearing does require recalculating the relevant configuration.

Sold by the metre: choosing the length

One unit of this listing corresponds to 1 metre of open belt. It is not a complete reel or an endless belt. If you order several metres, they will be supplied in one continuous piece whenever possible. If an uninterrupted length is essential for your assembly, please contact us before ordering to confirm availability.

It is for you if…

  • Your drive uses the 2GT profile and a 10 mm belt.
  • You want a Gates belt with an EPDM body and glass-fibre reinforcement.
  • You are renewing or building a linear-motion system and need to cut the required length.

It is not for you if…

  • You need a 1.5GT belt, another profile or an endless belt.
  • Your machine requires a different width and you are not adapting its components.
  • You expect a belt change alone to fix misalignment, play or an eccentric pulley.
