Trianglelab dual-drive gear set for 1.75 mm filament extruders. Its two toothed grooves grip the filament from opposite sides and rotate together, providing more consistent feeding and reducing the risk of slipping compared with a single drive gear.

Both gears are made from hardened steel with a nickel-plated finish. This treatment is intended to improve wear resistance, making the set particularly useful in frequently operated printers and when regularly processing filled or abrasive filaments.

Trianglelab nickel-plated dual-drive gear set with bearings shafts and M3 square nuts

Features and contents

FeatureSpecification
BrandTrianglelab
Filament1.75 mm
MaterialHardened steel with nickel-plated finish
Motor shaftØ5 mm with flat for the set screw
Primary gear1 unit with M3 set screw
Secondary gear1 hollow unit for two needle bearings
Bearings2 units
Auxiliary shafts2 × Ø3 mm
Nuts2 × M3 square nuts

The nuts and two shafts allow the kit to suit different compatible housings, but they do not replace the extruder body, tension arm, spring, motor or remaining fasteners.

Dimensioned drawing of the Trianglelab primary drive gear for a 5 mm motor shaft

Compatibility

It can replace a gear set in dual-drive extruders using this exact 1.75/5.0 geometry: 5 mm motor shaft, secondary gear on a 3 mm shaft and two bearings, room for a 14 mm primary gear and Ø9.5 mm outer teeth. Bearing supports, gear spacing and filament-path alignment must also match.

This architecture is used in the Original Prusa i3 MK2.5, MK2.5S, MK3, MK3S and MK3S+, always treating this item as a compatible Trianglelab replacement and checking the installed extruder. It is not a direct replacement for an original-extruder MK2/MK2S, MINI/MINI+, MK4/MK4S, XL, CORE One or Nextruder system.

Compatibility must not be assumed for every BMG, DDB, Clockwork, Sherpa or other dual-drive extruder: integrated gears, reversed layouts, 8 mm bores and different support arrangements also exist.

Installation and adjustment

  1. With the printer powered off, install both bearings in the secondary gear and use the appropriate shaft, supported at both ends by the door or tension arm.
  2. Fit the primary gear to the 5 mm motor shaft and tighten its M3 set screw against the shaft flat.
  3. Use a straight length of filament to align both grooves with the extruder inlet and outlet.
  4. Check that the outer teeth rotate without tight spots and that the secondary gear remains free.
  5. Increase tension gradually: excessive pressure can mark or deform filament and increase friction.

Keep the drive grooves free of filament debris. If lubrication is required, use a very small amount of suitable grease only on the outer synchronising teeth and bearings; the teeth touching the filament must remain clean and dry.

Extruder calibration

This gear set does not provide the 3:1 reduction of a complete BMG extruder by itself, so its customary 415 steps/mm must not be copied automatically. Measure actual extrusion after installation.

  • Marlin and RepRapFirmware: new value = previous value × commanded length / actual extruded length.
  • Klipper: new rotation_distance = previous value × actual extruded length / commanded length.

Resolve stiffness, dirt, misalignment or a loose set screw first; firmware calibration cannot compensate for a mechanical fault.

Hardened or standard version?

This Trianglelab set is the preferred option when wear resistance is a priority. For less demanding applications, the standard dual-drive gear set for a 5 mm shaft is also available, with the same nominal architecture but without a declared hardening or nickel-plating treatment.

It is for you if...

  • Your extruder uses this exact dual-drive geometry for 1.75 mm filament.
  • The motor has a 5 mm shaft and the secondary gear runs on a 3 mm shaft and two bearings.
  • You need a hardened version for intensive use or filled filament.

It is not for you if...

  • You have only checked that the motor is NEMA 17 or that the extruder is advertised as dual drive.
  • Your mechanism uses an integrated primary gear, 8 mm bore, different shafts or a Nextruder architecture.
  • You need a complete extruder with housing, reduction, motor and tension system.
