Tension with elastic
Digital comparative GT2 belt gauge with an elastic return mechanism. It combines an LCD displacement indicator, a bracket that rests on the belt and an elastic assembly that returns the measuring mechanism.
It allows measurements to be repeated under similar conditions and the adjustment of one or more belts to be compared. The display shows linear displacement in millimetres or inches; it does not directly indicate belt tension in newtons.
Features
- Application: comparative adjustment of GT2 belts.
- Reading type: digital linear displacement.
- Stated range: 0 to 12 mm.
- Selectable units: millimetres and inches.
- Functions: power, unit selection and zero setting.
- Return mechanism: replaceable elastic cord.
- Power supply: button-cell battery.
- Approximate length: 119 mm.
- Approximate maximum width: 66 mm.
- Thickness shown in the drawing: approximately 23 mm.

Interpreting the reading
The elastic cord provides the mechanism's load and the indicator shows the resulting displacement. The number should be used as a repeatable comparative reference, not as an absolute value that can be transferred between different machines.
The reading can change with the free belt-span length, instrument position, belt width or construction, elastic force and the reference used to zero the display.
The elastic cord can change its properties with use. When it is replaced, establish a new reference reading rather than directly mixing measurements taken before and after replacement.
Recommended procedure
- Switch off the printer and make a straight belt section accessible.
- Check that the elastic cord is correctly installed and undamaged.
- Select millimetres and establish a repeatable zero reference.
- Always place the bracket on the same span and in the same orientation.
- Allow the mechanism to act without adding pressure by hand.
- Record the reading before removing the tool.
- Adjust the belt in small increments and repeat the measurement.
- Check manually that the axis still moves smoothly.
Compatibility and applications
It is primarily intended for GT2 belts used in 3D printers and small linear-motion mechanisms. It can be used on Creality Ender 3, CR-10, RepRap, Prusa i3-derived and other Cartesian machines when a straight belt span is compatible with the bracket geometry.
On CoreXY mechanisms, it can help compare the left and right belts when measurements are taken on equivalent spans. An identical reading does not by itself guarantee that the complete belt path is correctly aligned.
For Voron printers and other machines with a documented tensioning procedure, follow the official instructions for the exact version. When the procedure specifies a frequency in hertz, this instrument does not measure that frequency directly.
Precautions
- Do not use the instrument while the machine is moving.
- Do not manually press the indicator during measurement.
- Do not compare measurements taken on belt spans of different lengths.
- Do not mix readings obtained with different elastic cords without establishing a new reference.
- Do not increase belt tension to compensate for misaligned pulleys or seized bearings.
Difference from the other version
This model uses an elastic cord as its return element. The digital gauge with retractable button uses a different mechanism and has different dimensions.
Readings from the two products should not be treated as equivalent without first comparing them under the same conditions.
The tool does not require any Marlin, Klipper or RepRapFirmware modification.
