M4 Brass threaded insert for creating a reusable metal thread in thermoplastic parts. It is installed by heating it in a controlled manner and pressing it into a purpose-designed hole, allowing the plastic to conform around its external knurling.

Its Ø6 × 8mm format provides a larger anchoring surface than the M3 version. It is suitable for brackets, enclosures and mechanical components using M4 fasteners when sufficient material surrounds the receiving hole.

Features and dimensions

  • Internal thread: M4.
  • Nominal outside diameter: 6mm.
  • Nominal length: 8mm.
  • Material: Brass, a copper alloy.
  • Thread: through-threaded.
  • Anchoring surface: external bidirectional knurling.
  • Primarily designed for heat-setting into thermoplastic parts.

Sales unit

The price is for one insert. The screw and installation tool are not included.

Applications

  • 3D-printed mechanical brackets.
  • Removable enclosures and covers.
  • Mounting motors, fans and electronic components.
  • Fixtures, prototypes and small mechanisms.
  • Parts subjected to repeated assembly and disassembly.

Compatibility

Use with an M4 screw having a matching thread pitch. The part must also accommodate a body measuring 6mm in diameter and 8mm long without weakening its walls.

Screw metric should not be confused with insert outside diameter. A hole designed for an M4 nut, another M4 insert or a shorter insert may not be compatible.

Preparing the printed part

  • Provide sufficient wall thickness around and beneath the insert.
  • Avoid thin walls that may split during installation.
  • Allow enough depth for the insert, displaced plastic and useful screw engagement.
  • Add perimeters or local material when the joint will carry significant loads.
  • First test several hole diameters using the same material and printing parameters.

Installation

  1. Heat the insert using a dedicated tip or temperature-controlled tool.
  2. Align it with the axis of the receiving hole.
  3. Press it in slowly without twisting or applying sideways force.
  4. Leave it flush and allow it to cool completely.
  5. Test the thread only after cooling.

There is no universal installation temperature. PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PA and other thermoplastics soften differently. Excessive heat may cause sinking, fumes, degradation or loss of supporting material.

Limitations

The exact thread pitch, pull-out strength, maximum torque and alloy composition are not specified. Structural or critical joints must be validated by testing the complete assembly.

Heat-setting is not directly applicable to thermoset resin, wood, metal or other materials that do not soften like thermoplastics.
