S-180-12 switching power supply designed to convert mains voltage into a 12 V DC output. It has a stated maximum current of 15 A and a maximum power of 180 W, making it suitable for integration into correctly sized electronic equipment and fixed installations.

Main features

  • Model shown on the unit: S-180-12.
  • Output voltage: 12 V DC.
  • Stated maximum output current: 15 A.
  • Stated maximum output power: 180 W.
  • Ventilated metal enclosure.
  • Screw terminals for the AC input and DC output.
  • Multiple output terminals for easier current distribution.
  • Output voltage fine-adjustment potentiometer.

Compatibility and power sizing

It can be used with 12 V devices provided that total consumption, including startup peaks, remains within the power supply's capacity. A suitable operating margin should be maintained instead of designing the installation to draw the full 15 A continuously.

Possible applications include 3D printers, plotters, LED lighting systems and certain CNC or laser projects. Compatibility is conditional: the voltage, consumption and startup peaks of every heater, motor, controller, fan and connected module must be checked individually.

For a 12 V 3D printer, the consumption of the heated bed, heater cartridge, motors, fans and electronics must be added together. A high-power heated bed can use most of the available 180 W, so this power supply should not be considered automatically compatible with every heated-bed printer.

It can also power a CNC Shield V3 and its associated electronics, provided that the motors, drivers and other loads operate at 12 V and their total consumption has been calculated beforehand.

Other available power ratings

For lower-power equipment, consider the 12 V 10 A 120 W power supply. If the installation requires more than 180 W, the 12 V 20 A 250 W power supply may be considered. Actual consumption and a suitable operating margin must be checked in either case.

Installation and safety

  • Check the input voltage selector before connecting the power supply to the mains.
  • When used in Spain, verify that the selector is configured for the corresponding mains voltage before applying power.
  • Install the unit inside an enclosure that prevents accidental contact with the terminals and provides adequate ventilation.
  • Correctly connect the protective earth terminal.
  • Use a suitable wire gauge for the current carried by each circuit.
  • Fit suitable fuse or circuit protection, a disconnecting device and cable strain relief.
  • Carry out all wiring and adjustment work while the unit is disconnected from the mains supply.
  • The mains-voltage installation must be completed by a person with suitable electrical knowledge.
  • Do not operate the unit while exposed to moisture, conductive dust or loose metal objects.

Current distribution

The duplicated output terminals make cable distribution easier, but they do not provide independent output channels. They share the total capacity of the power supply. The combined connected loads must not exceed the stated 15 A or 180 W.

Output adjustment

The potentiometer allows a small adjustment of the output voltage. Any change must be checked with a multimeter before connecting the load and kept within the voltage range accepted by all powered components.

This power supply is not a battery charger. Charging a battery requires a dedicated controller suitable for its chemistry and configuration.

EQUIPMENT START UP:

  1. Check that the mains voltage matches the input selected for the source (110/220v)
  2. Connect the power supply to the mains to check the output voltage (12/24v)
  3. The output voltage is adjustable, if it differs from the one you want for your application you can turn the regulator, preferably with the equipment off. Never use a metal screwdriver with the equipment on to make this adjustment.
  4. (Depending on the model) This power supply has a regulated fan, it will turn when it has load, check periodically and in the first use that the fan is activated correctly.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS COMPACT POWER SUPPLY:

  • Dimension the installation correctly, with an appropriate safety factor.
  • Never block or hinder the fan's air output.
  • Before connecting the equipment to the power supply, check that the available mains voltage corresponds to the voltage value of the equipment.
  • Connect the mains cable of the equipment to a grounded power outlet.
  • Do not place the equipment on wet or damp surfaces.
  • Do not expose the equipment to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
  • Do not expose the equipment to moisture.
  • Do not exceed the maximum input voltage allowed.
  • Comply with the warning and information labels on the equipment.
  • Wear dry clothes and rubber shoes to ensure insulation.
  • Do not insert metal objects into the equipment through the ventilation slots.
  • Do not place containers full of liquids on the equipment (danger of short circuit in case of shock).
  • Do not use the equipment near strong magnetic fields (motors, transformers, etc.).
  • Do not expose the equipment to strong shocks or vibrations.
  • Allow the unit to stabilize at room temperature before taking measurements (important for accurate measurement).
  • Do not modify the equipment in any way.
  • The equipment must be opened for service or repair by qualified personnel. It is recommended that repair work be carried out in the presence of a second person trained to perform first aid if necessary.
  • Keep the power source away from children.
  • Before cleaning the box, pull out the plug from the socket. Clean only with mild household cleaner. Make sure that no water gets inside the equipment to avoid possible short circuits and damage to the equipment.
