The BIGTREETECH TMC2130 V3.0 STEP/DIR is a bipolar stepper motor driver factory-configured for standalone operation. It receives STEP, DIR and ENABLE signals from the controller board, while motor current and microstep mode are set through the potentiometer and the socket's physical configuration.

It is a suitable choice when you want the quiet operation offered by StealthChop without configuring an SPI bus. This version does not provide firmware-controlled current, monitoring, sensorless homing or on-the-fly mode switching. For those features, use the FYSETC TMC2130 V1.2 prepared for SPI.

Key features

  • Driver IC: Trinamic TMC2130-LA for two-phase bipolar motors.
  • Revision: BIGTREETECH V3.0 configured for STEP/DIR.
  • Module supply: 12 or 24 V DC according to BIGTREETECH.
  • Logic: compatible with 3.3 and 5 V.
  • Format: StepStick, 20.32 × 15.24 mm PCB.
  • Current: adjustable through Vref; BIGTREETECH states 1.2 A operating and 2 A peak, always subject to cooling and motor requirements.
  • Sense resistors: 0.11 Ω, confirmed by the V3.0 schematic.
  • Microstepping: selected through CFG1/CFG2, with internal interpolation to 256 microsteps in supported combinations.
  • Cooling: heatsink included; airflow through the electronics enclosure is recommended.

The IC limit is not the module limit: the TMC2130-LA may be documented for up to 46 V, but BIGTREETECH specifies 12/24 V for this V3.0 carrier. Do not operate it above that range based only on the IC datasheet.

Controller board compatibility

The StepStick format supports many boards with replaceable drivers, but it does not guarantee universal compatibility. Before insertion, verify the position of VM, GND, VIO, ENABLE, STEP, DIR and all four motor outputs. Also check voltage, heatsink clearance and how the board's microstep jumpers map to CFG1/CFG2.

  • A4988/DRV8825-style sockets: conditional compatibility after checking the board manual, pinout and orientation.
  • Boards with integrated SPI wiring: may use this unit as a standalone driver, but SPI communication and advanced features will remain unavailable.
  • Motors: two-phase bipolar models whose required current can be set within a thermally safe range for the module.
  • Boards with soldered drivers: not compatible unless they also provide an explicitly documented external driver socket.

Microsteps and StealthChop in standalone mode

In STEP/DIR mode, CFG1 and CFG2 determine microsteps, interpolation and chopper mode. BIGTREETECH documents that leaving both open selects 16 microsteps with internal interpolation to 256 and StealthChop. Other combinations can select SpreadCycle or a different resolution.

Do not copy jumper positions from a different board: identify which jumpers actually reach CFG1 and CFG2. If the resolution changes from the previous driver, update steps per millimetre or rotation distance so that physical travel remains correct.

Safe current adjustment

  1. Check the motor's rated phase current and begin with a conservative setting.
  2. Disconnect both main power and USB before inserting the driver or handling the motor.
  3. Verify orientation twice using VM/GND and EN/DIR; do not rely on colour.
  4. To measure Vref, disconnect the motor, power the board from its main supply and measure between GND and the potentiometer wiper with an insulated probe.
  5. For this V3.0, BIGTREETECH states that clockwise reduces Vref and counter-clockwise increases it. Make very small corrections.
  6. Power off again, connect the motor and test short, low-speed moves.
  7. Check temperature, torque and skipped steps during an extended test before closing the electronics enclosure.

Too little current can cause skipped steps; excessive current heats both motor and driver and may trigger thermal protection. A heatsink helps, but does not replace airflow.

Marlin configuration

In current Marlin versions, select the standalone variant for each axis using this driver:

#define X_DRIVER_TYPE TMC2130_STANDALONE

Replace X with the relevant axis. Firmware microsteps must match the physical setting; retain or recalculate steps per millimetre for the actual mechanism. Since there is no SPI, current is not programmed with M906, M122 cannot read registers and sensorless options must not be enabled for this axis.

Klipper configuration

Klipper can operate it as a conventional STEP/DIR driver. Configure step_pin, dir_pin, enable_pin, microsteps and rotation_distance in the normal stepper section, but do not add a [tmc2130 stepper_x] section: without SPI, Klipper cannot configure or diagnose the IC.

[stepper_x]
step_pin: BOARD_STEP_PIN
dir_pin: BOARD_DIR_PIN
enable_pin: BOARD_ENABLE_PIN
microsteps: 16
rotation_distance: VALUE_FOR_YOUR_MECHANISM

microsteps: 16 is correct only when CFG1/CFG2 are actually configured for 16. Current remains controlled through Vref.

This is for you if

  • You want a straightforward TMC2130 for a verified StepStick socket.
  • You want to reduce motion noise through a standalone StealthChop configuration.
  • You prefer physical current and microstep settings without SPI wiring.
  • You do not need sensorless homing, monitoring or firmware-controlled current changes.

This is not for you if

  • You need to set current, chopper mode or microsteps from Marlin or Klipper.
  • You want to use M122, DUMP_TMC, StallGuard or sensorless homing.
  • Your board has no replaceable driver sockets or lacks a documented compatible pinout.
  • You want to operate above 24 V: BIGTREETECH documents this revision for 12/24 V.

Installation and precautions

  • Never insert or remove the driver, motor or motor cables while powered.
  • Reversed insertion can destroy both driver and controller board.
  • Confirm that each pair of motor wires belongs to one coil.
  • Prevent the heatsink or a metal tool from bridging pins or components.
  • Provide active airflow when current or enclosure temperature requires it.
