The BIGTREETECH TMC2130 V3.0 SPI is a two-phase bipolar stepper driver prepared for SPI communication. Motion uses STEP/DIR while firmware can set current and microsteps, select the chopper mode and read diagnostics.

This advanced version requires a socket or external wiring with the correct CS, SCK, MOSI/SDI and MISO/SDO signals. A StepStick-sized module is not automatically electrically or functionally compatible with an A4988/DRV8825 socket.

Specifications and functions

  • Trinamic TMC2130-LA; STEP/DIR plus SPI.
  • Carrier documented for 12/24 V.
  • 0.11 Ω sense resistors; nominal 20.32 × 15.24 mm PCB.
  • StealthChop, SpreadCycle, CoolStep, StallGuard2 and diagnostics when properly configured.
  • One driver and one heatsink supplied.

BIGTREETECH states 1.2 A operating and 2 A peak. These are not universal motor settings or a promise of continuous operation without cooling. Set current for the actual motor and monitor module temperature.

Compatibility

Verify VM, GND, VIO, ENABLE, STEP, DIR, all four coil outputs and every SPI signal before insertion. Each driver needs the correct CS. Older RAMPS-type boards may require external SPI wiring; a basic A4988 socket alone does not provide the intended smart-driver functions.

Marlin and Klipper

In Marlin select TMC2130, configure the board's CS and SPI bus, motor RMS current, microsteps and RSENSE 0.11, then check communication with M122.

In Klipper add the matching [tmc2130 stepper_*] section with the actual cs_pin, SPI bus, run_current and sense_resistor: 0.110. Confirm communication with DUMP_TMC. Sensorless homing also requires DIAG or a supported status path and calibration on the real mechanism.

It is for you if

  • Your board documents TMC2130 SPI support.
  • You need firmware-controlled current, modes and diagnostics.
  • You can verify pinout, jumpers and cooling.

It is not for you if

  • You want a plug-in driver without firmware configuration.
  • Your board exposes STEP/DIR only.
  • Your motor requires more current than the module can safely dissipate.

Installation: disconnect main power and USB before inserting the driver or handling the motor. Verify orientation by signal names, fit the heatsink without shorting components and never connect or disconnect a motor while powered.
