RAMPS 1.4, short for RepRap Arduino Mega Pololu Shield, is an expansion board for building modular controllers based on the Arduino Mega 2560. It provides connections for stepper motors, endstops, thermistors, a hotend, heated bed, fans, servos and other components commonly used in RepRap 3D printers and CNC projects.

Its architecture keeps the microcontroller and motor drivers as replaceable modules, making component replacement, axis configuration and firmware adaptation easier.

Main features

  • Model: RAMPS 1.4.
  • Designed to be installed on a compatible Arduino Mega 2560 board.
  • Five Pololu-format driver sockets: X, Y, Z, E0 and E1.
  • Six motor connectors: one for X, one for Y, two wired in parallel for Z and two for extruders.
  • Three MOSFET-controlled power outputs identified as D8, D9 and D10.
  • Three analogue temperature-sensor inputs: T0, T1 and T2.
  • Six endstop connectors: minimum and maximum for the X, Y and Z axes.
  • Auxiliary connectors for servos, I2C, SPI and other expansions.
  • Two resettable fuses corresponding to the RAMPS 1.4 power branches.
  • Nominal dimensions: 101.5 × 60.5 mm.
  • Configuration jumpers included.

The stated dimensions and features correspond to the RAMPS 1.4 format. As this is a generic board, some components, connectors and electrical capabilities may vary between batches and manufacturers.

Required components

The RAMPS 1.4 cannot operate independently. It must be installed on a compatible Mega 2560 board and fitted with suitable motor drivers.

Its sockets accept Pololu-format controllers such as the A4988 or the DRV8825. Their orientation, pinout, operating voltage, jumper configuration and current setting must be checked before installation.

Certain TMC drivers operating in Step/Dir mode can also use this format, but compatibility depends on the specific version. UART or SPI functions may require modifications, additional wiring and specific firmware configuration.

Outputs and sensors

The D8, D9 and D10 outputs can be assigned by the firmware. In a common RepRap configuration, D8 controls the heated bed, D9 a fan and D10 the hotend heater cartridge, but this arrangement can change according to the RAMPS variant selected in Marlin.

The T0, T1 and T2 inputs are designed for resistive sensors supported by the electronics and firmware, such as the 100K NTC 3950 thermistor. The correct sensor table must be selected in the firmware.

A thermocouple, PT100 or PT1000 sensor must not be connected directly as if it were a conventional thermistor. Some of these sensors require a dedicated input or signal-conditioning module.

Printer and machine compatibility

It is suitable for RepRap 3D printers and open designs based on Arduino Mega, including many self-built Prusa i3, Prusa Mendel, MendelMax and other customised Cartesian machines. It can also be used in small plotters or CNC projects when the available axes, inputs and outputs are sufficient.

Compatibility with a specific machine depends on its electronic revision. It should only be treated as a direct replacement when the machine already uses a RAMPS 1.4 or an equivalent Arduino Mega configuration with removable drivers and matching wiring.

It is not a direct replacement for modern printers such as the Original Prusa MK4, Bambu Lab machines, or Creality Ender-3 and CR-10 printers using their original controller boards. Converting these machines to RAMPS would require rewiring, firmware configuration or compilation, and verification of every electrical component.

Firmware

It can be used with firmware supporting Arduino Mega and RAMPS, such as Marlin. The firmware must be configured and compiled for the correct RAMPS variant, installed drivers, temperature sensors, machine dimensions, endstops and power-output arrangement.

Selecting the wrong variant may activate a different heater or fan from the one expected. Before connecting power loads, use the schematic and firmware configuration to verify the functions assigned to D8, D9 and D10.

Displays and expansions

It can be combined with a 2004 LCD Smart Controller or a 12864 graphical display, provided that the appropriate RAMPS adapter and cables are available and the firmware is configured for the selected display.

Power supply and high-current loads

The RAMPS 1.4 design is primarily intended for 12 V systems. It must not be connected directly to 24 V unless the required modifications and checks have been completed on the RAMPS board, Arduino Mega, drivers and all peripherals.

The nominal fuses and integrated MOSFETs do not guarantee that any heated bed can be connected directly. Current capability depends on the installed components, board quality, terminals, wiring, ventilation and actual load consumption.

For high-current heated beds, use a correctly sized and installed external heated-bed MOSFET module to remove the main load from the controller board. The power supply must also provide the correct voltage and sufficient power for the complete system.

Installation precautions

  • Fully disconnect the power before installing drivers, changing jumpers or connecting motors.
  • Carefully check the input power polarity.
  • Verify each driver's orientation before insertion; incorrect orientation can destroy the driver and controller.
  • Configure the microstepping jumpers before installing the drivers.
  • Set each driver's current limit according to the motor and available cooling.
  • Do not connect or disconnect motors while the board is powered.
  • Check the endstop pinout; do not assume that every module uses the same signal, ground and 5 V order.
  • Use an appropriate wire gauge and correctly fitted terminals for power connections.
  • During initial testing, monitor the temperature of the connectors, fuses and MOSFETs.
  • Enable and test firmware thermal protection before operating heaters unattended.
