Bipolar hybrid 0.9° NEMA 17 stepper motor, reference 42HS60-0.9 / 17HS6401S-09, with a 60 mm body, 5 mm D shaft and declared minimum holding torque of 72 N·cm. It is intended for mechanisms requiring higher static torque while retaining the NEMA 17 front interface.
Its 400 full steps per revolution provide greater nominal angular resolution, but the long body also adds mass, inertia and inductance. It is therefore particularly relevant for torque-demanding axes with enough space and is not automatically the best choice for a fast moving carriage.

Installation, current and firmware
Use a current-regulated bipolar driver; never connect the motor directly to a 12 or 24 V supply. With a configurable TMC, 0.8-1.0 A RMS is a cautious starting range. Increase gradually only when more torque is required and motor and driver temperatures remain acceptable. This version's higher inductance can reduce available torque sooner at high speed.
Identify the coils by continuity and do not assume wire colours. Never connect or disconnect the motor while the driver is powered.
- Marlin: configure
DEFAULT_AXIS_STEPS_PER_UNITorM92. At 16 microsteps: GT2 20T = 160 steps/mm; TR8×8 = 800 steps/mm. - Klipper: use
full_steps_per_rotation: 400and the transmission's actualrotation_distance. - RepRapFirmware: use
M92and, with compatible drivers,M906.
When replacing a 1.8° motor while retaining transmission and microsteps, double steps/mm and review maximum speed, acceleration and controller step-pulse capacity.
Compatibility and comparison
Check that there is room for the 60 mm body and that shaft, mounting, current, torque, connector and pinout all match. It is not a universal replacement for a specific machine simply because it is NEMA 17.
If 72 N·cm is unnecessary, the 0.9° 42-40 reduces mass and length, while the 0.9° 42-48 is an intermediate option.
It is for you if
- You need more holding torque within the NEMA 17 format.
- The mounting accepts a 60 mm body and approximately 480 g.
- You can configure current, steps/mm, acceleration and cooling.
It is not for you if
- The motor is carried by a moving carriage sensitive to mass.
- You need maximum speed without validating the torque curve.
- You need a drop-in replacement without checking the full integration.
Dimension-dependent accessories include the NEMA 17 bracket, 20T GT2 pulley for a 5 mm shaft and configurable TMC2209 driver.
Contents: 1 motor and an approximately 1 m cable. Other accessories are not included.
