RAMPS 1.5 is an Arduino Mega 2560 expansion shield providing replaceable stepper-driver sockets and the main connections required by a RepRap 3D printer. Its modular design suits open projects and repairs of machines already based on the RAMPS architecture. Mega board, drivers and display are sold separately.

RAMPS 1.5 Arduino Mega 2560 shield with replaceable driver sockets and power outputs

Main connections

  • Five replaceable driver sockets: X, Y, Z, E0 and E1.
  • Two Z-motor connectors sharing one driver; they are not independent Z channels.
  • Three temperature inputs and three MOSFET outputs.
  • Published board size: 101.5 × 60.5 mm.
  • One RAMPS 1.5 shield and jumpers supplied.

Power and loads

A 12 V installation is the conservative choice for this classic architecture. Do not use 24 V unless the exact RAMPS revision, Mega board, regulators, capacitors, fans and every peripheral have been verified.

A fuse marking is not a guaranteed continuous load rating. Safe current also depends on terminals, PCB tracks, MOSFETs, soldering, cable size, tightening, airflow and enclosure temperature. Use a correctly rated external power stage for high-current heated beds.

Warning: wire both power inputs with the supply disconnected and verify polarity. Reverse polarity can destroy the shield, Mega and peripherals.

Drivers and Marlin

A StepStick module is compatible only when VM, GND, VIO, ENABLE, STEP, DIR and coil outputs match. Never use colour or potentiometer position as an orientation guide. UART or SPI TMC drivers need additional routing and firmware configuration.

Marlin uses the RAMPS 1.4 definitions for this architecture. Select BOARD_RAMPS_14_EFB, BOARD_RAMPS_14_EEB, BOARD_RAMPS_14_EFF or BOARD_RAMPS_14_EEF according to the actual heater/fan output order, then configure drivers, sensors, endstops, dimensions and display for the machine.

It is for you if

  • You are repairing a RAMPS/Mega machine or building a documented RepRap project.
  • You want replaceable drivers and direct access to wiring.
  • You can verify the schematic, polarity, current and firmware.

It is not for you if

  • You need a modern 32-bit controller with integrated drivers.
  • You require two independent Z drivers.
  • You intend to connect a high-current bed without checking the complete power path.
  • You need a drop-in replacement for an undocumented commercial printer.
