WINKLE PLA HD Glow Alien Green is a 1.75mm phosphorescent filament that absorbs natural or artificial light and emits a green glow in darkness. It is particularly suitable for decorative models, cosplay, non-certified visual markers, scale models and creative projects requiring a luminous effect.

Under normal lighting, the material has a natural or cream appearance. The printed part must first be exposed to light to activate the Glow effect. Glow intensity and duration depend on the light source and exposure time, ambient darkness, part thickness, geometry and the amount of phosphorescent material.

Alien Green phosphorescent effect

The material does not produce light continuously and requires no electrical power. Its phosphorescent particles store part of the energy received during light exposure and gradually release it as a green glow.

  • It can be charged with natural or artificial light.
  • The glow is most visible in completely dark surroundings.
  • Its intensity gradually decreases after the light source is removed.
  • Thicker walls and areas containing more material may produce a more noticeable effect.
  • It is not a substitute for certified emergency lighting or safety signage.

Recommended applications

  • Decorative figures, toys and ornaments.
  • Cosplay accessories and components.
  • Decorative luminous lettering, logos and signs.
  • Scale models, stars, planets and educational projects.
  • Markers, handles and objects that need to be located in darkness.
  • Artistic parts and prototypes combining light and darkness.

Initial printing profile

A useful starting point is approximately 210°C at the nozzle, a bed temperature of 55-60°C, active part cooling and a moderate printing speed of 50-60mm/s. These values should be adjusted to suit the printer, hotend, nozzle, layer height and required finish.

WINKLE's stated 14mm³/s is a declared maximum rather than a guaranteed flow rate for every printer. Reduce the flow rate or slightly increase temperature within the recommended range if under-extrusion, poor layer bonding or irregular extrusion appears.

Abrasive material and nozzle selection

The additives used in glow-in-the-dark filaments can accelerate the wear of Brass nozzles. A conventional nozzle may be used for testing or occasional prints, but its diameter and condition should be checked after printing significant quantities.

For frequent or long prints, we recommend a 0.4mm hardened-steel V6 nozzle, provided that the hotend actually uses a compatible V6 nozzle geometry. It is not directly interchangeable with proprietary systems such as Bambu Lab, Creality Unicorn, Prusa Nextruder or other special nozzle formats.

Hardened steel transfers heat less effectively than Brass. Depending on the hotend, it may be necessary to use the middle or upper part of the temperature range, reduce flow or print slightly more slowly.

3D printer compatibility

It is functionally compatible with most FFF/FDM printers that use 1.75mm filament and can operate with a PLA profile. This includes open machines such as different Ender 3 versions, Prusa MK3/MK4, Bambu Lab A1 and A1 mini, Voron and HTA3D printers. Final compatibility depends on the fitted nozzle, filament path and temperature limits of each machine.

WINKLE declares compatibility with AMS Lite. This statement should not automatically be extended to the standard AMS or every automatic material system. On feeders with long tubes, gears or enclosed filament paths, check for wear caused by the phosphorescent compound.

Improving the Glow effect

  • Charge the printed part with an intense light source before moving it into darkness.
  • Use sufficient wall thickness and avoid excessively thin sections when a stronger effect is required.
  • Try different orientations to increase the surface exposed to light.
  • Consider a larger nozzle for large parts, provided it is compatible with the hotend and required level of detail.
  • Print a sample before producing parts where the amount of glow is important.

Storage

Store the filament in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and inside a sealed bag with desiccant. If popping, bubbles, excessive stringing or an irregular surface appears during printing, the filament may need to be dried using a PLA-compatible programme that is also safe for the spool.

Alternatives and accessories

If a phosphorescent effect is not required and a wider colour range is preferred, see our WINKLE PLA HD 1.75mm filament.
