Winkle PLA 870 filament is manufactured in Spain from NatureWorks Ingeo 3D870, a PLA grade developed specifically for 3D printing with improved impact performance and the ability to develop greater thermal resistance through controlled annealing. This reference is supplied as a 300g spool with a nominal 1.75mm diameter in Jet Black.

It is a useful option for functional prototypes, brackets, enclosures, tooling and parts that need more toughness than a conventional PLA without directly taking on the printing demands of ABS. NatureWorks reports thermal and mechanical properties comparable with ABS in specific tests, but actual performance depends on orientation, design, interlayer bonding, infill and post-processing.

Benefits of Ingeo 3D870 PLA 870

  • Improved impact strength: formulated for functional parts that need more toughness than general-purpose PLA.
  • PLA-like printing: good detail, low odour and a lower tendency to warp than materials such as ABS under typical conditions.
  • Good build-plate adhesion: supports a stable first layer on a clean, correctly levelled surface.
  • Properties enhanced by annealing: controlled crystallisation can improve thermal performance and modify impact behaviour.
  • Manufactured by Winkle: a Spanish-brand filament made from an identified NatureWorks resin.
  • 300g format: practical for evaluating the material or producing short runs without buying a large spool.

Density, glass-transition, melting and HDT values come from the Ingeo 3D870 resin data sheet. They are typical values or specimen results, not guaranteed specifications for every spool or printed part. Pigments, orientation, infill and print processing can change the result.

Heat and impact comparison of general Ingeo PLA, Ingeo 3D850, Ingeo 3D870 and ABS under test conditions

The chart compares amorphous and crystalline specimens. In the official 3D870 sheet, mechanical properties change significantly between XY, YX and ZX orientations; the chart must therefore not be read as a promise that every part will outperform ABS in every direction.

Initial printing parameters

  • Nozzle: 200–230°C as the commercial starting range.
  • Bed: not essential; 50–60°C can improve adhesion depending on surface and geometry.
  • Reference nozzle: a standard 0.4mm nozzle is a good starting point; other diameters require flow, temperature and speed recalibration.
  • Part cooling: tune it to the part. Strong cooling supports bridges and detail, while reducing it can improve interlayer bonding.
  • First layer: clean the surface, level the bed correctly and set nozzle distance before printing a functional part.

The optimum temperature depends on hotend design, speed, colour, flow and geometry. For demanding work, run a temperature tower and mechanical tests in the same orientation as the final part.

Annealing to improve performance

NatureWorks recommends 110–120°C. As a reference, a wall approximately 3.18mm thick may require around 20 minutes, although time changes with thickness and overall size. Use equipment with verified, uniform temperature, support or fixture large parts and allow them to cool before handling.

Annealing can cause shrinkage, warping or dimensional change. Measure the part before and after treatment, run a test specimen first and do not use the result directly in a critical component without validation. The published 75–85°C HDT is not a guaranteed continuous service temperature.

Storage and moisture

Keep the spool sealed, dry and protected from heat. Popping, bubbles, excessive stringing or a rough surface can indicate moisture. NatureWorks specifies 50°C for eight hours for pellet resin; Winkle does not publish a finished-spool drying cycle for this reference. If drying is required, use a controlled filament dryer, check that the spool can withstand the temperature and do not transfer an industrial process without prior testing.

Compatibility and applications

Compatible with FDM/FFF 3D printers configured for 1.75mm filament and able to hold the stated temperature range reliably. For automatic material systems or enclosed spool feeders, also check the dimensions and free rotation of the 300g spool; sharing the same filament diameter does not guarantee physical compatibility with every system.

  • Functional prototypes and parts subject to moderate impacts.
  • Enclosures, brackets, clips, tooling and workshop accessories.
  • Parts requiring more toughness than conventional PLA.
  • Components whose thermal performance will be enhanced and validated through annealing.

NatureWorks does not certify this grade for food-contact applications. It should not be used for safety-critical, structural-load or critical-temperature parts without application-specific testing.

If fast crystallisation, stiffness and detail matter more than impact performance, compare it with Winkle Ingeo 3D850 PLA 850. For 1kg spools and a wider colour range, see Sakata 3D Ingeo 3D870 HR-PLA.
