Winkle PLA 850 filament is manufactured in Spain from NatureWorks Ingeo 3D850, a PLA grade developed for 3D printing filament with good detail, a low tendency to shrink and fast crystallisation. It combines accessible PLA-like processing with the ability to improve a part's heat resistance through correctly controlled annealing.

It is available with a nominal 1.75mm diameter in 300g or 1kg spools and in Transparent, Ash Grey and Jet Black, subject to the selected option and current stock.

Why choose Winkle PLA 850

  • Ingeo 3D850 raw material: a NatureWorks grade developed specifically for 3D printing monofilament.
  • Good precision and detail: suitable for prototypes, models, enclosures and carefully finished parts.
  • Low tendency to warp: supports dimensionally stable parts when first-layer setup and cooling are correctly tuned.
  • High stiffness: useful for brackets, light tooling and components that must hold their shape under moderate loads.
  • Fast crystallisation: allows greater thermal performance than an amorphous PLA part to be developed through annealing.
  • Made in Spain: Winkle manufactures and controls the filament at its facilities in Salamanca.

The HDT and mechanical properties published by NatureWorks apply to crystalline specimens under specific conditions. They do not automatically describe an as-printed part or guarantee a continuous service temperature. Design, orientation, perimeters, infill, colour and annealing cycle all affect the result.

Recommended printing parameters

  • Nozzle: 190–230°C.
  • Bed: 50–70°C; it may not be necessary for small parts on surfaces with good adhesion.
  • Speed: 50–80mm/s as Winkle's published general range.
  • Reference nozzle: 0.4mm.
  • Chamber: open, according to Winkle's current recommendation.
  • Part cooling: tune it for geometry and interlayer strength; there is no single optimum percentage for every part.

These values are starting points. Actual temperature must be adapted to hotend design, speed, flow and colour. Calibrate flow and retraction, and run a temperature tower before producing a functional part or a long series.

Heat resistance and annealing

Ingeo 3D850 is formulated to crystallise quickly. NatureWorks publishes a general annealing range of 80–130°C and obtains its 80–90°C HDT from a fully filled printed specimen annealed at 110°C for 15 minutes. This is a test condition, not a universal cycle for every part.

Before annealing an important part, print a specimen with the same orientation and geometry, measure its dimensions and use an oven or other equipment with verified temperature. Post-treatment can cause shrinkage, warping, loss of transparency and finish changes; large parts may require supports or fixtures while heated.

Drying and storage

Keep the spool sealed with desiccant and protected from heat. If popping, bubbles, stringing or an irregular surface appear, use a temperature-controlled filament dryer and a cycle validated for the spool. NatureWorks specifies 80°C for four hours for pellets before industrial extrusion; this is above the material's glass-transition temperature and must not be transferred directly to a finished spool, which could distort or stick together.

Compatibility, applications and limitations

Compatible with FDM/FFF printers configured for 1.75mm filament and able to operate reliably within the stated range. When using an automatic material system, verify the physical compatibility, diameter, width and free rotation of each spool format; manufacturer-declared compatibility does not replace that check.

  • Dimensional prototypes and high-definition models.
  • Enclosures, brackets and rigid general-purpose components.
  • Light tooling and functional parts under moderate loads.
  • Parts whose heat resistance will be developed and verified through annealing.

Regulatory compliance of the base resin does not automatically certify coloured filament or an FDM part for food contact. The nozzle, printer, interlayer porosity and finishing process also matter, so this description does not claim food-contact suitability.

If impact performance is the priority, consider Winkle Ingeo 3D870 PLA 870. For more colours or larger spool formats in the same 3D850 grade, see Sakata 3D Ingeo 3D850 PLA 850.
